Replacing O Ring To replace the o-ring, loosen the setscrew in the collar on the flyer shaft under the handle ¼ turn. Loosen setscrew in flyer drive wheel. Move the big wheel away from drive wheel enough to let it slip to the bottom of the shaft. Slide the collar down and pull the flyer shaft out enough to allow the removal of the flyer drive wheel. Exchange the o-rings and replace in the opposite order.

Lubricating the current design with spring on the big wheel shaft The shaft needs to be kept greased. To geese the shaft remove the right crank arm by loosening the setscrew. Remove the spring and slide the shaft out of the bearings. Smear a small amount of white grease on the shaft and replace. Check on it every few months depending on use. The flyer shaft should be oiled where the bobbins ride. If the treadles squeak when moved, put a small amount of oil on the treadle shaft. Adjusting tension on spring with the position of the crank arm The spring tension on the big wheel shaft determines the amount of traction the flyer drive wheel has and produces drag on the wheel. The tighter the spring the better traction the drive wheel has and the more drag there is on the turning of the big wheel. To adjust the tension loosen the set screw on the right crank arm and while holding the big wheel in compress the spring with the crank arm until the desired tension is achieved. If the flyer drive wheel slips it needs more tension. Adjusting position of collar on flyer shaft The other reason the flyer drive wheel might slip is that the collar that holds the flyer shaft in can be dragging against the handle. Changes in humidity can affect the wood tightening the handle against the collar. Loosen the setscrew in the collar under the handle on the flyer shaft. Retighten with a small amount of space between it and the bearing in the handle. Black mark removal The annoying black marks on the big wheel caused by the black o-ring can be removed with a product a resourceful pocket wheel owner found called De-Solv-It
